Jess Day: Wrecked Weekend

13 October – 5 November 2020

Discover objects familiar and foreign carved from the limestone stacks of Western Australia’s most treasured tourist locations.

Dive into the depths of popular car culture and immerse yourself in forms of recreation reminiscent of long summer road trips.

Find alternate ways to consider local landscapes through a reimagining of Western Australia’s contemporary culture of vacation.

Investigating misadventure occurring in Australian recreational activities, Wrecked Weekend focuses specifically the disappearance of cars along WA’s coastline. Consumed by the sea through various unexpected means, the vehicles and their contents are lost to the waves, buried in salt and stone. Jess Day’s first solo exhibition is a study of the speculative possibilities made available through the consideration of recovered leisure products and car parts as evidence of an archaeological dig.

Jess Day is an emerging artist and writer based in Perth, Western Australia. Since graduating Fine Arts Honours at Curtin University in 2020, Day has been an artist in residence at Another ARI Bassendean and a University Associate at Curtin University.
