Kieron Broadhurst: The Island

6 – 31 May 2020

The Island is a solo exhibition from artist Kieron Broadhurst that creatively examines the nature of fiction and the concept of utopia, through a combination of contemporary installation art and science fiction.

In this exhibition, Broadhurst posits the real existence of an island utopia, tracing its appearances in literature and culture throughout history. At Moana, he presents sculpture, video, and text that explores this history and participates in its fiction. Broadhurst invites the audience to share an experience which engages with, and estranges them from, the construction of history and geography as factually-based truths.

Irreverent and intellectually dextrous, The Island ultimately considers the capabilities of speculative fiction, the character of utopia, and the possibilities of its expression.

Kieron Broadhurst is a contemporary artist based in Perth. After completing a BFA(Hons) from Curtin University he was selected to participate in Hatched 2020 at PICA. He has since exhibited prolifically, including at Firstdraft, PSAS, and Free Range. Broadhurst is currently undertaking a Doctorate of Philosophy (Art). The Island is his first exhibition at Moana.
