On Sincerity

7 November – 6 December 2020

A group exhibition curated by Chelsea Hopper, On Sincerity investigates the relationships between sincerity and irony in the work of five contemporary Australian artists. It considers methodologies these artists undertake in approaching their own sincerity, often held in contemporary art as an unforgivable sin of self-absorbed naiveté.

Sincerity, however, may have a new found potential for serving the exploration of vulnerability, interpersonal connection, loneliness and courage.

This exhibition of new works attempts to address these knotty questions – Can one produce an artwork that is sincere? Can an artwork be both ironic and sincere? Or can one be sincere through irony? Is sincerity possible through irony? Are sincerity and irony unacknowledged accomplices?

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
