Carla Adams: Maverick

18 September – 11 October 2020

Developed during a studio residency at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts, MAVERICK investigates the complexities inherent in modern online courtship, and the contested terrain of digital intimacy.

In developing MAVERICK, Adams set herself the task of establishing an online relationship through the format of an internet dating site. Shortly after creating her profile, Adams was contacted and aggressively pursued by a prospective partner under the handle of MAVERICK. The resulting dialogue between the artist and her suitor acted as the impetus for the creation of objects which bridge the divide between the digital and physical worlds.

In a series of delicate wall tapestries and intimate devotional portraits, Adams questions the role of the artist’s muse in a contemporary studio practice and challenges our understanding of gendered behaviour on the internet.
