Interregna

19 January – 10 February 2020

Interregna marks a hometown reunion for Abdul Abdullah, Casey Ayres and Nathan Beard, who will exhibit alongside one another for the first time since their collaboration as The Greater Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere- a two-year project last exhibited as a week-long installation in the 2020 Next Wave Festival, Melbourne. For their debut at Moana Project Space, the artists present independent new bodies of work, encompassing painting, installation, video and sculpture.

Interregna– a word that signifies a gap in continuity, typically designating the period a throne remains absent between successive rulers – sees each artist document constructions of specific personal identities inflected by political and societal contexts. Whether exploring closeted or repressed violence, racial subtexts, or taboo sexual deviancies, each artist employs text and the corporeal form to draw masked or subconscious tensions to the surface, approaching their chosen subjects with an almost devotional sincerity.
