Elizabeth Pedler: Imposter Syndrome

11 December – 31 January 2020

Imposter syndrome is a new project from artist Elizabeth Pedler that explores the fluid nature of identity. In this experimental performative work, the artist invited colleagues and friends to exchange identities. Participants visited Pedler’s studio, swapped clothes and belongings, and assumed each other’s places. They would then independently perform their inverted roles: Pedler would leave the studio and perform the activities of the guest participant, and the guest would act out their ideas about what the artist would do in the studio space. The performance was recorded though photographs, video surveillance, screen capture, and documentation.

While performing the alternate identities, Pedler took on tasks such as running errands, curatorial and doctoral research, studying for a medical degree, and interacting with participants’ friends. By performing the role of the artist, participants produced photographs, a manifesto, conceptual research, and many and varied forms of procrastination. All of these activities have been documented and the artist by Pedler as her own practice.
