Emma Buswell: Under Development

16 October – 8 November 2020

The mining boom has ended, and Perth has entered a period of uncertainty which is at the same moment an opportunity. Office space, formerly in high demand, lies vacant. Residential apartments barely constructed are surplus. Artist Emma Buswell explores the possibilities of this situation. Suggesting uses for the newly accessible property, she depicts a different future for Perth – alternatively critical and comic, practical and political.

The culmination of an extended period of research, Under Development is a timely examination of our property-obsessed culture. In a sculptural installation of large painting works resembling advertising signs, the exhibition mimics the aesthetics and language of real-estate. Buswell explores the way that architecture and the visual culture of real-estate expresses promise and drives desire, and the ways an uncertain future represents an opportunity for optimism.

Exhibition opening Friday 16 October from 6pm
