Casey Ayres: Apate

5 – 26 September 2020

Apate is an exhibition of textile-based sculpture by seven emerging Perth-based visual artists, masquerading as the launch of an avant-garde fashion label.

Borne from a sense of frustration about the relevance of contemporary visual art, Apate is intended as a critical inquiry into the utopian promises offered by the worlds of retail and fashion. Linked by ongoing investigations into materiality and functional art forms, the seven artists in Apate have tailored their diverse practices to realise innovative handmade garments and accessories – or wearable
artworks – exclusively for this project.

This project has been supported by the Department of Culture and the Arts through their Young People and the Arts Program, and has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council, its arts funding and advisory body.
