Kieron Broadhurst: The Island

6 – 31 May 2020

The Island is a solo exhibition by Kieron Broadhurst investigating the reoccurring motif of island utopias in various cultures, mythologies, and pop-cultural imaginings.

The Island presupposes the existence of a moving island utopia on Earth. This island is semi-conscious, god-like. It beckons to different individuals at different points in time, and these individuals respond by attempting to articulate the Island’s existence. However, much like any Godhead, The Island can only be gestured towards by human acts of creativity – it is never fully articulated. This exhibition presents sculptural, text, and video works that catalogue the history of these gestures, and explore the interrelation of fiction, history, and theory.
